    Milego czytania

Online banking giant Egg is unrepentant about its email marketing policy,
despite admitting that it risks annoying customers by sending them messages
even if they have opted out when joining up.

A fairly presumptuous marketing message sent out by the bank recently, and
posted on the uk netmarketing message board by an irate Egg customer, read:
"When you applied for an Egg card, you may remember ticking the little box
choosing not to receive information from us on products and services. Of
course we respect your choice. But as an Egg Card holder we just think you
might kick yourself for missing out on our new Egg Rewards email."

Pointing out that the email regarded a new rewards scheme for credit card
holders, a spokesperson for Egg said that this type of message was something
it did "quite often" - to make sure that customers who have opted not to
receive marketing "still don't want to".

The company said that it is required by banking law to update customers
about new products every three years, although admitting that it sends out
marketing messages to 'unsolicitable' customers more regularly than that.
The spokesperson added: "It's unfortunate if we annoy somebody... but if you
are unsoliticable and a new product or service comes out, you could be
    annoyed as well."

Fulfilling one promise, Egg reported at the end of April that it achieved
profitability in the first three months of this year on the back of
increased borrowing by its credit card users.

The company, created by Prudential in October 1998, recorded a pre-tax
profit of Ł4.1m against a loss of Ł32.7m in Q1 2001 as credit card borrowing
rose to just under Ł2bn. Egg claims to have just under 2m customers.
